In Another Place

In Another Place was a collaboration between the Contemporary Visual Arts Network East Midlands and ten venues, bringing new art to new audiences. 10 regional organisations invited visual artists to present original artworks on advertising billboards in a range of locations for 6 weeks.

I was invited to produce artwork to represent the organisation UK Young Artists in a precursor to artwork I will produce next year in Nottingham: City Takeover. UKYA will 'takeover' Nottingham to present work from 200 national and international artists in a programme of exhibitions and events. UKYA currently have an Open Call submission for this event, that can be accessed by their website

My billboard artwork (pictured above), Pineapple NCM 1891-54, is all about making connections between the billboard site as it once existed and how it now exists. The idea developed after seeing Nottingham City Museum and Galleries’ Lace Archive, taking the initial starting point of Nottingham’s lace industry. It was important to me that the artwork for the billboard responded to the site to resonate with the audience. ‘NCM 1891-54’ was an item uncovered from the archive, a beautifully intricate black lace cape which used a pineapple as inspiration for the pattern. This referenced the site as it now exists, with a fruit market on the corner of the intersection where the billboard is located. This led my investigations, combining everyday materials, like fruit nets, with intricate needle lace techniques to create a hand-crafted design influenced by the original item.

Alongside the artworks, each artist developed wrap-around activities to engage new audiences with the project. I delivered a presentation to University students from Nottingham Trent, University of Derby and DeMontfort University mapping out my own journey post-study to life as a self-employed maker, sharing the lessons I have learned along the way, and delivered a drop-in workshop teaching needle-lace skills followed by a visit to the billboard site. My presentation to University students was recorded live and can be accessed via this link
